This idea would add an optional realistic physics option that would have realistic thrust forces, and maybe even eliminate the gyroscope component altogether. Essentially the difference between combat sims and team fortress 2 in the realm of physics. The game currently allows a thruster to be placed anywhere and it will apply a linear force in the direction that is placed. While this is completely fantastic for creative ...more »
The turquoise thruster flame is nice and all, but i'd like to be able to have it integrated with the color picker. And maybe change in the terminal thing.
Black thruster glow for stealth would be cool.
Red, green, orange all that cool stuff. Would make some ships look even cooler, and might not be too hard to implement with the color picker already being integrated in the game.
At the moment, the only way to control the roll, pitch or yaw of your ship is to use gyroscopes. Gyroscopes are great and all, but filling room after room with them in order to get decent manoeuvrability out of your ship isn't exactly realistic. I propose a new type of thruster block, which unlike the existing ones, would apply torque to your ship. They would be mapped onto the same keys as pitch, roll & yaw are, and ...more »
When a thruster is placed on a rotor, it does not behave as expected. It is not considered part of the main ship and doesn't fire automatically when you press forward, back, up, down, left or right. To make it fire, you have to wire it manually to the action bar, leading to an awkward control scheme.
Making them fire automatically considering the rotation of the thruster would make VTOL designs a lot easier to fly.
Hydrogen thrusters are excellent for building missiles. Unfortunately, the large 5x5 hydrogen tank makes the missile a huge target for ship defences. Smaller tanks (eg. 3x3 and 1x1) would allow for thinner missiles that are harder to hit. It also allows smaller craft to take off from a planet.
When building ships the size of Imperial Star Destroyers, larger thrusters are desirable to scale well with the enormous mass of the ship. They look better too.
I feel like there should be a consequence for extended thruster use. Perhaps an overheating that reduces efficiency. There could also be a block that counter acts this and acts as a Heat Sink.
